At least 2 dead, others seriously hurt in Louisiana movie theater shooting
LAFAYETTE, LA. — A gunman opened fire on a movie theater in Lafayette, La. Thursday night, killing at least two people and injuring at least seven before killing himself, police said.
Police Chief Jim Craft said at a news conference that police received reports of a shooting at the Grand Theatre 16 around 7:30 p.m. Four officers entered the theater to confront the shooter and found him dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound. Two other people have been confirmed dead.
Police said there are at least seven other injured victims, with injuries ranging from minor to critical and life-threatening. All injured victims have been taken to local hospitals — one was in surgery and “not doing well,” according to Craft.
Louisiana State Police Sgt. Brooks David told The Washington Post that the deceased, including the shooter, remain inside the theater, along with state troopers and members of a bomb squad.
At a second news conference around 11 p.m. local time, Craft said that the youngest of the victims was in his or her late teens, while the oldest was about 60.
Craft added that the suspect is a 58-year-old white male with a criminal history. He seemed to be sitting alone in the theater and used a handgun during the shooting. Police are not releasing further information about his identity because of the ongoing investigation.
