On September 23rd, Ureka left a note and some money for her young daughter who was in the custody of her grandmother.
On September 24th, Ureka took her two remaininig children and tossed them over the Cross Lake bridge. One child was 10-month-old Joshua Black and another was 5-years-old. She the drove off leaving her children to drown.
First responders located the children and noticed that Joshua Black was deceased, however his 5-year-old brother was floating on his back and despite suffering from facial injuries was still alive. He explained to first responders that his mother threw them off the bridge. Responders also initally searched for Ureka’s daughter not knowing that the young girl was safe with family.
Ureka was eventually found at a rest stop in Texas, (Ureka’s van has Texas Plates) where she was arrested and extradited to Shreveport. She is facing second-degree murder and attempted second-degree murder charges.
Ureka has an extensive criminal past filled with charges of: prostitution, trespassing, resisting arrest, simple assaults, domestic abuse batter, property damage, possession of marijuana, possession of drugs in the presence of a minor, aggravated battery, human trafficking, arson and other charges spanning 15 years. Over these years she has been instructed to attend counseling, anger management and parenting classes. She would usually not attend these classes or at least attend one. At this time it is unclear if Ureka is mentally competent to stand trial and will be evaluated.
In regards to the arson charge, in 2010 Ureka broke in her ex’s home accompanied by her then 2-year-old daughter. She was angered by an argument and set his floor on fire. She was sentenced to 5 years but would spend 9 months.
In 2017, Ureka admitted to recruiting a 17-year-old into the life of prostitution. She told the teen that she would show her the right way to do it and in a couple of months she would be able to afford luxury items.
In between this time, Ureka’s oldest child was in foster care, which is why the courts order parenting classes and anger management. With all these stipulations in place for Ureka, including a curfew, she would become argumentive and refuse to do as told.
Her sisters state that she has suffered from mental illness for years and they have tried to help her but she refused. They even went as far as attempting to get the children but Ureka would not give them away. One of the sisters claim she never even knew about the birth of Joshua.
Mental illness is a real thing but does it excuse certain behaviors? Should people be forced to get mental help and if they have one child in the system, should their other children automatically be taken away? So many things to unpack here but we will definitely keep Ureka’s other children in our prayers, especially the 5-year-old who was nearly killed by her.
May Joshua Rest in Peace.
